The place to be in Durham tonight is the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University. Each Thursday from 5-9pm, admission to the Nasher is free, which is wonderful. But this season, they also put on Summer Days, Nasher Nights, with programming that goes above and beyond what this great Durham gem offers regularly.
Tonight kicks off with Dinner and a Movie starting at 5pm. Tonight’s film is Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles. If you’re unfamiliar with the Toynbee Tiles, it’s a pretty fascinating story! For more information, check out the trailer here.
You’ll get a two-course dinner special at the Museum Café, with the movie starting at 7pm. Dinner patrons get reserved film seating, but if you just want to see the film, additional auditorium seating opens up on a first-come, first served basis at 6:30pm. For dinner reservations, call the Museum Café at 919-684-5135 or make reservations online at nasher.duke.edu/cafe.
Also tonight at the Nasher, they have Nasher Creates: Adult Studio from 6-8pm. This week, local illustrator Jordan Grace Owens will be leading the workshop and helping visitors make paper dolls. This is a drop-in session, so you can come anytime between 6-8pm. After you’ve created your art, hang out with a drink from the cash bar!
Starting at 6pm, there is a guided public tour of the Nasher’s current exhibitions. This tour is free and lasts approximately one hour.
And finally, Doug Varone and Dancers: Stripping the Dance will run from 6:30-7:30pm. This interactive presentation shows the process of creating ReComposed, a new work commissioned by the American Dance Festival and the Nasher and based on the pastel drawings of Joan Mitchell. According to the museum, “Aspects of the dance will be stripped and put back together again in front of the audience and with their help.” This event is free and open to the public in the two front galleries in the Biddle Pavilion at the Nasher.
Seriously, the Nasher has got your Date Night or Girls’/Guys’/Cat Lovers’ Night Out all planned for you!
If you can’t find anything fun at the Nasher, seriously, what is wrong with you? Just kidding, y’all: if the arts scene isn’t your cup of tea, check below for some of the other events going on in the Bull City tonight.
